Microsoft Holding On To ‘Games for Windows Live’

Despite rumors, Microsoft does not plan on doing away with it’s unpopular ‘Games for Windows Live’ service. Games for Windows Live ways an online service, similar to Xbox Live, for PC video games. It had been rumored for almost a year that the technology giant would be deactivating the service in early July. In fact Microsoft had said in a support page that the service was to be discontinued on July 1st, 2014. This post was swiftly removed. The only thing that was discontinued was the marketplace, which came with the transition from Microsoft Points to real currency. Microsoft made the following statements on this situation in a statement to Game Informer.

Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual.

We are continuing to support the Games for Widows Live service. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.

The former alleged move had excited many developers; in fact it lead one Microsoft owned studio to cease it’s utilization. Phil Spencer, the head of the Microsoft Xbox Division, said in March that Microsoft will be renewing their focus on Windows and PC gaming.

Information from Game Informer contributed to this report.
