PAX East 2013 | SmashMuck Champions: Putting a New Spin on the MOBA Genre
Day 1 of Pax 2013 has already left me very satisfied with the games that will be releasing this year. Over the past 3 years I’ve been mainly playing games in the MOBA genre like League of Legends and Dota 2. There are 2 things that remains prevalent in these game types which are character lvl progression and long match time. SmashMuck Champions by Kiz Studios takes those two common MOBA factors and completely throws them out of the window. “SMuC” mixes fast paced gameplay with 5-10 minute match times and several game modes within a MOBA environment and champion skill sets. There are 5 different game modes that this game offers to keep your experience fresh and exciting. You use the WASD keys to move, a left mouse click to auto and a right mouse click to use your special abilities. Each ability is set to the 1,2,and 3 keys. I mostly played a game mode called “Plunderball” which is a capture the flag based match type. The game is a breath of fresh air for players that simply can’t devote a lot of time into a MOBA experience. The best thing about the panel at PAX is the fact that they made a champion on the spot using ideas from the audience. I had the honor of naming the champion Platymus. A lot of their focus is on what they call open development which is a development process that involves community input and participation. This is a game I would definitely suggest to any MOBA fans or anyone that might want to get into the genre but doesn’t want the commitment that comes with it. Oh and I forgot to mention, It’s Free. The game is currently in it’s closed beta phase on Steam. If you’re interested in trying it out, I have a couple keys to give out so let me know.
Till next time gamers,
