The move, albeit a bit disappointing, is far better than releasing a bug-filled title. With the team giving press a hands-on demo for an event next week, it’s safe to say that bug fixing and optimizations are key from here on out. The release date moving to November 19 does offer a few potential interesting scenarios. Both next-gen consoles should be out sometime right around there. I would posit that both Sony and Microsoft would like for their consoles to land a couple weeks prior to that date and Thanksgiving in the US. So it’s possible we will see a late October, early November release for both. Avoiding the election would also seem like an ideal situation, so there aren’t any other events to take mindshare off of a next-gen console release.
Luckily, both systems offer some form of backwards compatibility. So, those that are buying it on a current gen system will be able to at least play it on their shiny next-gen hardware. Surely there will be some benefits like decreased load times or a steadier framerate, but it’s important to remember that this version of Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t the one that will be optimized for next-gen. That, as CDPR have stated, will be coming later in 2021. Microsoft has already revealed that Smart Delivery will allow you to own both copies of the game once the next-gen title is ready, and I’d imagine Sony’s cross-buy will make an appearance and do the same.
On top of the new consoles, there are some rumors swirling that the 3XXX gen cards from Nvidia might be released this year as well. While Nvidia canceled a showing that was presumed to show off the new card in March, the rumors continue to pile up pointing to a 2020 release. What better way to break in your new RTX card than with Cyberpunk 2077?
Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release (and I hope this is the last time I write this) on November 19, 2020 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, with the presumption that they will run on the next-gen consoles.
