Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Launch Date + Next Gen Info

Few things in life are certain. Death, taxes, and Call of Duty. Although it was revealed a bit later than usual and surely COVID-19 is playing some part, Activision has released a slew of details for their upcoming entry, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. That’s right, a direct sequel to the original Black Ops from Treyarch.

Single Player Details

As the title suggests, the game will take place in 1981, the height of the cold war. The single player portion will be led by industry vets, Raven Software. They have been deep into Call of Duty in recent years, but also developed the severely underrated Singularity title. They are beloved in the industry, and the Cold War era seems like a perfect match for the studio.

Multiplayer Info

As for the multiplayer portion, Treyarch will take the regions for their typical Call of Duty multiplayer, as well as Call of Duty Zombies. Warzone is also going to be intrinsically tied into Black Ops Cold War. According to the Activision Blog:

Warzone will share content with Black Ops Cold War. Black Ops Cold War includes shared progression features with Warzone, adding inventory items that can be used in both titles. Plus, Warzone players will still have access to Modern Warfare® content they earned previously, like Operators and weapon blueprints. More information on Black Ops Cold War and Warzone will be announced at a later date.

Next Gen Details

With next-gen consoles finally on the horizon, Black Ops Cold War features cross play and cross generation support. As detailed in their blog:

  • The entire community across PlayStation (PS4, PS5), Xbox (Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X) and PC (Battle.net) can party up and play together.

Now, this is where things get confusing. Next gen versions (or part of the digital cross-gen bundle) are $69.99 (yes, an increase over the standard $59.99). The cross-gen bundle will work with current and next gen consoles in the same family. If you buy a current gen version, the option to upgrade (presumably for a $10 fee) does exist.

Here are details on how you can upgrade your current gen version to a next-gen version from Activision’s support page:

  • PlayStation 4 version will have an option to upgrade to PlayStation 5 through the PlayStation Store. Please note: The PlayStation 4 disc must be inserted into the PlayStation 5 to access the digitally upgraded PS5 version of the game.
  • Xbox One version cannot be upgraded to Xbox Series X. Please note: Please see the information below regarding the Xbox Series X version as part of the digital Cross-Gen Bundle.

It is important to note that both current gen versions will work with backwards compatibility for their respective systems. Of course, this will be without the next gen upgrades like faster loading time, higher frame rate, etc.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set to release on November 13, 2020 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
