With the pandemic causing a lot of delays in the entertainment industry, “The Best of Smallville” is the final episode of Superman & Lois until May. Harvest Fest has descended upon Smallville, and Clark can’t wait to show his family this magical time of year. Unfortunately things start going awry. Superman runs into more infected by X Kryptonite. Jonathan is still not adjusting well, and Luthor confronts Lois for the first time.
Sharon Powell is back at the Smallville Gazette, but this time she isn’t alone. Her mysteriously missing son, Derek, just showed up again, with some retrograde amnesia. He’s not sure what happened to him, or so he says. Lois and Chrissy let them go, but they’re obviously skeptical. Later at the donation drive, Derek is struggling with headaches. The headache causes Derek to lose control of his heat vision, and he burns down the building. When Derek disappears again, Chrissy decides to do what Lois Lane would do and tracks his phone.
I was really worried for Chrissy because I like her character. She followed Derek and saw him getting into a machine run by Morgan Edge’s assisstant, Leslie Larr. Thankfully Chrissy didn’t get herself into more trouble because Superman is here. Derek has all of Superman’s powers, and they take off. When Derek is cornered, he uses his heat vision to kill himself. Superman is completely baffled, even though there wasn’t really anything he could have done. This was the first time that Superman saw the X Kryptonite used on a human. How many more are out there, and what does Edge want to do with them?
Captain Luthor has set his sights on Lois Lane. He approaches her pretending to be a fellow reporter, who just so happens to have an engineering background and used to work for Luthorcorp. Lois says that Lex Luthor is the only person who’s worse than Morgan Edge. Luthor has made contact with Lois Lane because he knows that Kal El is connected to her. He doesn’t know Superman’s identity, but he does know he’s near Lois. On Luthor’s world, he was the one who got the girl; he was married to Lois Lane. He notices that the only difference in this world’s Lois is that she isn’t with him. Is there a version of him on this world too? Also, is losing Lois the reason for Superman’s evil turn?
The twins are still struggling to adapt to Smallville life. Jonathan is having a tough time uprooting his whole life in Metropolis. This was the first time that he was supposed to have a piece of his old life; his girlfriend, Eliza, was planning to come to Smallville for Harvest Fest. Unfortunately, she took this opportunity to break up with Jonathan before making the trip. Feeling like he has no control over his life, Jonathan tries to find a way to go back to Metropolis, potentially staying with friends. At first, Lois and Clark are furious, but Clark knows all too well the pull he feels to leave home.
When Clark was a teenager himself, he was struggling in Smallville. He didn’t fit in with the kids at school, and he wanted to be a hero. He knew he was meant for something bigger, so his mom gave him the key from his ship. She knew he was ready to explore his history. What she didn’t know is that Clark was ready to leave Smallville. Knowing she had to let him become who he was meant to be, Martha Kent let her son go. Because of this, Clark knows exactly how Jonathan feels. He promises to let Jonathan make his own choice, but first, he has to give Smallville another chance.
The final scene leaves us on a cliffhanger. Tag attacks Jordan, yelling that he did this to him. Does this mean that Tag knows about Jordan’s heat vision? It’s still unclear if Jordan got his powers from Superman or potentially from X Kryptonite. Before Derek died, he called Superman by his Kryptonian name, Kal El. How does he know that name? Does that mean Morgan Edge knows that name? It’s going to be a long two months before we get more episodes, but I can’t wait to see more from Superman & Lois.
