Supergirl’s winter finale, “Hostile Takeover†had a lot of surprises and revealed a lot about Kara’s family. Aunt Astra is back in town, and she has an agenda. Meanwhile, Cat Grant has been hacked, and Kara is here to save the day. This is the last episode of the year for Supergirl, so make sure to catch up before 2016.
Aunt Astra is back and goes straight for Supergirl. She pulled a kryptonite knife on Supergirl, and she even figured out a way to make her suit shield herself from kryptonite. Astra says that she needs for Kara to be a hero and that she doesn’t want to fight. Kara gets away seemingly just in time.
Back at CatCo, Kara is trying to help put out another fire. Cat Grant has been hacked. So far, nothing seems to be too damaging. There were no demands from the hacker, so Cat assumes that this was just to embarrass her. Cat meets with the board of directors of CatCo, and they think that Cat may need to step down if the hack gets out of hand. Cat doesn’t want to do that but will of course do what’s in the best interest of CatCo. In the meantime, she enlists Kara, Winn, and James to look through all of her emails to find anything that could be damning to her and CatCo.
Kara uses her super-hearing to listen in on the board of directors as they are getting into the elevator. She overhears Dirk Armstrong saying that Cat will be out by the end of the week. At that point, she thinks that it’s an inside job. But, Kara doesn’t know how to prove that Dirk Armstrong could be behind the hack. So, Kara, Winn, and James consult the one person they know who has legal experience, Lucy Lane.
As if that isn’t enough pressure for Kara, Astra decides to hover outside of CatCo as a calling to Supergirl. Kara goes and battles Astra all throughout the city. Alex warned Kara that she would have to be willing to kill Astra, but that’s just not who Kara is. She argued that Superman doesn’t kill, but Alex didn’t seem to care. In the end, Kara won and brought Astra into the DEO.
When Astra wakes up, she only wants to talk to Kara. Big surprise there. Astra says to Kara that Earth is on the brink of ecological destruction, and she’s here to save Earth. She reveals that Alura, Kara’s birth mother, used Kara to lure Astra out of hiding so that they could arrest Astra for crimes against Krypton. Astra tells Kara that she could have saved Krypton. When Kara confronts the hologram of her mother, Alura can’t answer her questions. Kara asks if Astra could have saved Krypton, but the hologram Alura just keeps saying, “I’m not programmed to give you that information.â€
Back at CatCo, Kara, Winn, James, and Lucy have found evidence of Dirk Armstrong’s involvement in the hack. He was also dumb enough to use CatCo property for the hack meaning any emails that he sent involving the hack are property of CatCo. Thankfully the hack didn’t drag Cat through the mud too much. She never cared about the negative things said about her, but she didn’t want her family to be negatively affected. It turns out that Cat has another son, Adam Foster. She didn’t plan on Adam when she was building CatCo, so she didn’t fight hard enough for him. She sends him money every month but is otherwise out of her life. She was going to go as far as to resign from CatCo to keep him safe and away from a hideous media storm. Talk about a mother’s love and coming from Cat of all people.
After all of the CatCo drama, Kara is talking with Cat on her office balcony. Cat is thankful that Kara, Winn, James, and Lucy helped her keep her company. Dirk Armstrong is no longer a threat to CatCo. Now that Cat is taking more notice in Kara, it seems that she is finally seeing her for who she really is. Cat starts putting the pieces together of when Kara would disappear right before Supergirl showed. Kara tries to backpedal, but it’s too late. Cat demands she remove her glasses. When she does, Cat thanks Supergirl for everything she’s done. Kara doesn’t have time to think of the implications before Alex calls with bad news.
Alex reviewed the footage of Astra and Kara’s fight. She realizes that with Astra being a warrior, there’s no way she would have been caught that easily. She’s clearly just the diversion while her minions carry out the actual plan. Supergirl rushes over to Lord Technologies where the rest of the Fort Rozz inmates are. We got to see some pretty interesting new powers. Supergirl starts to fight them off, but that’s all we get. I guess we will just have to wait to see more.
