During today’s ‘State of Unreal’ opening session at Game Developers Conference (GDC), Epic games showed us a peak of whats to come for the future of gaming through the Unreal Engine. Epic Games showed off a demo of Star Wars, in the demo we get to see two stormtroopers just chatting about, all this done with Unreal Engine 4.
To be more specific the demo shows off Next-generation rendering features that include:
- Textured area lights
- Ray-traced area light shadows
- Ray-traced reflections
- Ray-traced ambient occlusion
- Cinematic depth of field (DOF)
- NVIDIA GameWorks ray tracing denoising
The demonstration is powered by NVIDIA’s RTX technology for Volta GPUs, available via Microsoft’s DirectX Ray Tracing API (DXR). An iPad running ARKit is used as a virtual camera to draw focus to fine details in up-close views. 4 Nvidia Volta’s were used to create the Star Wars Demo. Check out the trailer above to be wowed by what the future holds and hopefully consoles will be running this in the next few years.
