Epic Games is changing their business model with the public licensing of their highly renown Unreal game engine available to everyone at the monthly lease of $19 per month plus a 5{3a19833c997fa52158a43c449fe089ff048ac0506a335cac10721cfa396ff282} royalty on game sales. The Unreal Engine 4 is the latest iteration of Epic Games’ highly sophisticated gaming technology catered usually towards AAA budget franchises such as Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, and more; today’s announcement puts all its assets at the hands of developers of all skill levels. Citing the evolving gaming industry, Tim Sweeney said that Epic had to “really rethink our whole business as to how we make the engine available to teams.”. Unreal Engine 4 gives developers the opportunity to create Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android software; and of course this will also give indies the environment to create magnificent titles for home consoles as well. “Everybody who subscribe to Unreal Engine 4 gets access to the engine’s complete C++ source code,” said Sweeney. Devs aren’t bound by any contracts making them free to subscribe/unsubscribe from Unreal Engine 4 at will.
I’m excited for the game developer community, this week’s GDC conference has certainly brought great news thus far.
