Abyss Odyssey, releasing July 15 of this year, is a fantastical 2-D action side-scroller in the vein of Dragon’s Crown. In the game, you choose one of three characters and must fight through the abyss. But, each floor in the Abyss will be procedurally generated in both layout and difficulty, making the trek to take out the evil that lies within that much more unique. More riches will be found in those floors with harder difficulty, but the enemies will be far stronger and even more deadly. Although the enemies are difficult, your character isn’t a slouch. Also, being able to tackle the game with a partner, whether it be couch co-op or via internet, can give you that tactical advantage.
The game features a robust block and parry systems, which make the combat more intricate than simply button-mashing. Familiarizing yourself with the block and parry system appears to be key to tackling the Abyss. Another unique detail is the ability to transform into any enemy character in the game by capturing their souls or buying them. This idea fleshes out the small player cast and could allow for some interesting gameplay.
The nearly eight-minutes of pure gameplay does a great job in describing its features and showcasing it’s platforming action. Check out the trailer below to get a feel for the game.
Abyss Odyssey is being developed by ACE Team, published by Atlus, and will be released on July 15, 2014 on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
