Following in the footsteps of their previous fighter, Injustice 2, Mortal Kombat 11 will feature a bevy of gear customizations for each fighter. Every combatant will have three costume pieces to customize along with three augment slots per piece. In Injustice 2, these augment slots did things from altering the visuals of moves, to actually adding in various moves. It will be interesting to see if they continue that trend because locking moves out via gear pieces didn’t sit well with many.
Coming over from MKX, MK11 will, once again, feature three different variations of the characters with different movesets. The big change for MK11 is that you can fully customize your moveset. In the past, they were locked as certain variations.
Further moving from previous Mortal Kombat titles, the overall gameplay is revamped quite substantially. Whereas in past games you had one meter and grew this meter via first strikes and delivering and taking damage, in Mortal Kombat 11 you have three different meters: an offensive meter with two bars, a defensive meter with two bars and a single meter for fatal blows. Separating bars between offensive and defensive skills certainly deepens an already deep combat system. The real big change, however, is the bar for fatal blows. Gone are X-Rays; now, once your health hits the 30{3a19833c997fa52158a43c449fe089ff048ac0506a335cac10721cfa396ff282} mark, you will have access to deliver a fatal blow. While certainly x-ray like, these moves have one huge distinguishing factor: you can use it once per game. If it is blocked or you miss, it is on a cool down, but you can only use it once in the entire match. It will definitely be interesting to see the meta that revolves around the optimal time of utilizing this new technique. Another technique that was added in was a perfect block. This block allows for additional time to punish your enemy with a counter.
How could we not talk about fatalities? Right when you think they can’t get any crazier, they get Baraka ripping someone’s face off, proceeding to rip the muscles from said face, stabbing their brain out with his blade, and, of course, eating it -crazy. Enjoy this blood filled look at fatalities below.
Mortal Kombat 11 is set to release on April 23, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch.
