Start Small | Supergirl “Stronger Together” Review

"Stronger Together" -- When Kara's attempts to help National City don't go according to plan, she must put aside the doubts that she -- and the city's media -- has about her abilities in order to capture an escapee from the Kryptonian prison, Fort Rozz, when SUPERGIRL moves to its regular time period, Monday, Nov. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Supergirl is off to the races with “Stronger Together.” Now that Kara Danvers has officially become National City’s Supergirl, she’s just itching for her next fight. It seems that she has become increasingly more anxious to save the world. Sadly, not every fight is as easy. And now that she’s in the public eye, Supergirl has even more concerns, the public opinion.

After the DEO runs Supergirl through a series of tests to work on her powers, Winn calls with news of a major fire down at the port. When she gets there, the firefighters wonder for what she’s waiting. They even say that Superman would have already had the fire out by now. She can’t seem to get the hang of blowing out the fire, so she decides that she should try to move the ship out of the way of the fire in order to avoid a major explosion. Unfortunately, she decides to pull the ship, and she actually cracks the hull of the ship causing an oil spill. That’s all it takes to turn the public against Supergirl.

After that embarrassment, Kara must go back to work for the ever frustrating Cat Grant. On the plus side, Kara did use her heat vision to make sure Cat’s latte was hot, but she continued to make a fool of herself during a meeting when she laughed out loud at the thought of Cat getting a face to face interview with Supergirl. Cat tries to exploit James Olsen’s relationship with Superman to get the interview with Supergirl. She is at least on the right track that both heroes are probably related.

Kara has a chance to ask Cat what she would say to Supergirl if she had the chance. Surprisingly, Cat gave some pretty great advice. She would advise Supergirl to start small, just like she did. Kara decides to do just that and recruits her favorite sidekicks, Winn and James. Am I the only one having a hard time not calling him Jimmy? Winn and James help Supergirl use her powers on smaller crimes to get used to being a hero and to get the public back on her side.

Well now that she has warmed up, let’s throw an alien at her. A particularly nasty looking alien, a Hellgrammite, escaped from Fort Rozz and is killing people to feed off of a chemical called DDT. Supergirl is ready to get in on the action, but Henshaw doesn’t feel like he can trust Kara just yet. He and Alex decide to go on their own in luring in the alien. They use the DDT as bait. What they don’t know is that General Astra, Kara’s long forgotten aunt, is ready for just this situation.

Astra is hoping that the Hellgrammite will lead her to her niece, Kara. It eventually does, and Kara is stunned to see her aunt in front of her. She doesn’t understand how Astra could have survived Krypton’s explosion, but of course, Astra wasn’t on Krypton. She was in Fort Rozz with the criminals. She claims that Alura, Kara’s mother, put her there because she was being a hero, trying to save their world. I’m sure there’s more to the story than that, so hopefully we get to hear about it. After a pretty fantastic fight scene, it’s Henstraw who stabs Astra with a Kryptonite dagger. Astra gets away, but she knows now that there’s something that can hurt her.

Kara was definitely having a difficult time becoming Supergirl in this episode. James tells her, “If anybody can fill Superman’s boots, it’s you.” While she clearly appreciates his confidence, she laughs and says, “That was a really good pep talk.” I like that she thought it was a little heavy handed, and they sort of joked about it. Kara mentions that she wants to be different from Superman. On Krypton, she remembers that accepting help is not a shame, it’s an honor. She doesn’t want to go it alone but would rather have a support group around her.

At the end of the episode, we found out that Hank Henstraw seems to have a secret himself. Henstraw helps Alex set up a room for Supergirl, complete with her own hologram of her mother. For a moment, his eyes flash red. Is this good? It is bad? Clearly, Henstraw is not who he appears to be. Could he be the superhero, Martian Manhunter? If so, that’s great news for Supergirl, but we will just have to keep tuning in for answers.
