Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019 Â is looking to shake up the formula in a big way. Not only is the title going to be crossplay (interesting how this will be balanced), but it is also not going to include a season pass and will feature a highly retooled engine. Of all things that I thought would never happen this console generation, the massive changes taking place to this beloved franchise are way, way up there.
A potential confusing name notwithstanding, it’s hard not to get excited about the shake up  that is happening. The one title that really seemed to kick off this behemoth of a franchise was Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. It’s clear that the folks over at Activision also agree and are using that as a launching off point of sorts. Not only are there physical changes to the game, based on what we’ve seen, Infinity Ward almost seems to be taking a pseudo Spec Ops: The Line idea by making us actually care about the atrocities of war in a game. Outside of killing the other thing before it kills you, none of the COD games really placed emphasis on the true sides of war outside of an outstanding scene or two.
Detailed in Activision’s official press release for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: “This is an all-new Modern Warfare reimagined in every way,†said Dave Stohl, co-Studio Head, Infinity Ward. “We are creating an emotionally charged experience that’s inspired by the headlines in the world today, where the rules are grey and battle lines are blurred. Players will join a varied cast of international special forces and freedom fighters in gripping and heart-pounding missions through iconic European cities and volatile expanses of the Middle East. It’s intense, it’s exciting, and we can’t wait for our fans to play this October.â€
Will this revitalize a franchise that has been getting long in the tooth? Impossible to say, but it certainly seems that they are trending in that direction.
