Image Comics published Hitomi #1 this week, a new story set in Feudal Era Japan. Hitomi is in search of a famous and out of place samurai, who has a dark connection to her past.
The art of Hitomi is surprisingly light and easy to see all of the details on each page. Despite the dark nature of the content, the writing so far has been witty and fun. Hitomi is in search of a samurai who slaughtered her entire family, surprisingly leaving her alive. She still doesn’t understand why.
When she goes searching for this man, she finds a monk who tells her to learn from the samurai first before exacting her revenge. Hitomi almost gets herself into more trouble after she steals sake from another samurai. He catches up with her and chases her before she falls into frozen water.
The irony of course is that who should save her from the cold depths? None other than Yasuke himself, the samurai she’s been searching for. He and his friends leave Hitomi after saving her and giving her a blanket to keep her warm. It looks like she will catch up to Yasuke in this next issue.
The little we saw so far from Yasuke shows a different story than the one that Hitomi painted of a ruthless samurai. Yasuke is tired and only wishes to go home. So how will Hitomi respond to Yasuke? Is there more to the story of her family’s murder?
Hitomi #1 hit comic book stores on Wednesday October 12th, 2022 and is slated to have five issues published by Image Comics.
