Lucifer is starting to find meaning to his existence among the humans in “Lucifer, Stay. Good Devil.†If you watched the Pilot, you may already be succumbing to Tom Ellis’s charms as Lucifer. He’s witty and funny and still full of darkness. This week, he helps an injured Chloe catch a murderous paparazzo.
It looks like Lucifer is going to be a procedural, at least to some extent. So, let’s start with the case. Our reigning complex detective, Chloe Decker, is called to the scene of a celebrity’s son who has been run off the road and killed. An infamous paparazzo, Nick Hofmeister, has confessed to the crime, but Lucifer and Chloe aren’t sure that he’s guilty. Lucifer gets Nick to confess that he’s covering up for someone else. He says that he deserves to go to prison for the murder even if he wasn’t the one who physically did the act.
Of course, Chloe has a sordid history with this paparazzo during her time in the industry as well as her childhood as the daughter of a famous actress. Lucifer is more than happy to get the guards at the police station to let him in to see Nick, who he so hilariously calls Dung Beetle. Lucifer tries to get the juicy details, but what he finds out isn’t that interesting to him. Two weeks after the premiere of Hot Tub High School, Chloe’s father passed away. Nick wanted to get the first picture of Chloe grieving and crashed the funeral. Chloe ended up punching him, and the rest is history. Lucifer was bored with that story because it made him depressed. Maybe he is feeling more human emotions after all.
It turns out that Nick was covering up for his protege, Josh Bryant. Nick kept saying that he didn’t want anyone to follow in his footsteps. After his misstep with Chloe, Nick tried to not cross the line with being a paparazzo, but Josh didn’t feel the same. Chloe tells Lucifer, “You don’t get to decide who gets punished and how.†With a big grin on his face, he replies, “That’s exactly what I do.†But Chloe storms off leaving a frustrated Lucifer. He decides to be more like his old self and deal out some punishment. He kidnaps both Nick and Josh and pits them against one another.
Lucifer puts a gun at the feet of both men and wants to see who will kill the other. Josh picks up the gun and says, “The only way to be first is to realize that there is no line.†He pulls the trigger, but nothing happens. Lucifer only laughs. Chloe comes to break up the party, but by then, Nick has picked up the other gun, which is most likely loaded. Just as Nick pulls the trigger, Lucifer does something really extraordinary. He prays.
Down comes Amenadiel. Time slows, and Lucifer can pluck the bullet out of thin air and save the day. Amenadiel tells Lucifer that his time in Los Angeles is changing him. Lucifer admits that his brother is right, but he doesn’t seem to care. Lucifer admits to having no control over his changes but that it is “positively thrilling.†While I appreciate the nod to Lucifer’s angel brethren, Amenadiel isn’t that interesting of a character to me just yet. I hope that we get to see more from Amenadiel and possibly other angels. Maybe we could even see more of their powers.
At one point, Chloe asks Lucifer how he survived getting shot six times by Jimmy. He tells her that she already knows the answer, but she can’t admit that he’s actually the devil. She even tries to see if he was wearing a bulletproof vest, but we know that he’s not. Then, Chloe goes to visit Jimmy. He’s in some sort of psych ward after Lucifer tortured him. Jimmy is reluctant to talk to Chloe until she brings up Lucifer’s name. Jimmy then begins banging his head on the glass and screaming that he’s the devil. I wonder what Chloe will do with this new information.
