Kara’s friendship with Lena Luthor is put to the test, when she is accused of aiding and abetting her mother, Lillian Luthor, formerly of Cadmus. Even when the evidence stacks against her, and all of Kara’s friends think she’s guilty, Kara won’t turn her back on Lena. But, is it worth it? Is Lena truly as good as Kara thinks, or is she just another evil Luthor out for Kryptonians?
Lillian Luthor is standing trial for her crimes while part of Cadmus. Lena testifies against her mother, but Lillian isn’t going to just sit around waiting to be convicted. John Corben aka Metallo gets a delivery of Kryptonite while in prison. He breaks out and saves Lillian from an exhausting trial. Of course, video evidence shows Lena getting the Kryptonite that freed Corben, so she ends up behind bars. Despite the evidence, Kara maintains that Lena is good, and she would never do this. None of her friends have any faith in Lena because she’s a Luthor. What was nice about this episode is that they showed us a flash of what it was like growing up for Lena.
We got a small glimpse of Lena’s childhood, and it wasn’t the prettiest. We already know that Lena is an outsider, but we finally learn just why she came to be a Luthor. One day Lionel just brought Lena home, and it seems like Lillian never liked her. What she didn’t know is that she is actually Lionel’s daughter with a different woman. She went to live with the Luthors after her birth mother died, since Lionel didn’t want her to go into the foster system. Lillian claims that Lionel was mad when she would spend time with Lena, so she pushed her away and focused on Lex. It’s always hard to tell if Lillian is telling the truth, but it’s interesting that Lena is actually a Luthor by blood.
After Lena has been accused and is in jail, Lillian breaks her out. She’s hoping that Lena will come back to her. Lillian claims to want to prove her love to Lena and asks her to join Cadmus. Even though Lena is down, and no one seems to believe that she’s innocent, aside from Kara, she doesn’t accept. Lillian takes Lena to one of Lex’s secret facilities. It turns out Lillian had an ulterior motive for kidnapping her daughter, surprise, surprise. Lex had boxes full of weapons that only one with Luthor blood could open. Since we now know that Lena is a Luthor, she can open the box.
After Lena gets the box open, they realize that something is wrong with Corben. His Kryptonite is synthetic and not reacting well with his body. They only have a few minutes before Corben goes nuclear and kills them all. Thankfully, Supergirl and J’onn come to help. They get Lena out, while Lillian escapes. Poor Corben explodes, so I guess that’s the end of Metallo. Lena knows that Kara sent Supergirl for her, and she’s so grateful to have a friend who believes in her. No one has ever stood up for Lena before, so hopefully Lena stays on a good path thanks to Kara.
Kara finally realizes that maybe just focusing on being Supergirl and a young reporter isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Mon-El pretends to be enjoying dating Eve, but Kara gets the real story when she runs into Eve at CatCo. They only went on the one date. Eve thinks he’s a great guy, but he couldn’t stop talking about Kara during their whole date. This clearly makes Kara happy. Kara meets with Mon-El and lets him know that he constantly proves her wrong. It got her thinking that maybe she can have it all. She realizes that she doesn’t have to choose between being Supergirl and having a relationship.
The final scene this week gave us a new character, and if you said, “Huh!?†after he said his name, you’re not alone. After Kara and Mon-El share a kiss, they are interrupted by a strange orb or light flowing through the living room. A man jumps into Kara’s apartment announcing that he is Mr. Mxyzptlk. Okay try it with me now, “Huh?!†Mr. Mxyzptlk claims to be in love with Kara Zor-El. Who is this guy, and how did he get here? Stay tuned for that one.
