Sony and Housemarque have had a long history. This acquisition felt more like a “when” than an “if.” The two have been making games together since the early days of the PS3 with Super Stardust HD. They truly exploded onto the scene with the PS4 launch title, Resogun, and they haven’t looked back since.
Their few games following Resogun didn’t seem to obtain that same mindshare, but they answered why they are one of the most unique developers out there with the spacey time-loop launch-window PS5 title, Returnal.
With a light launch of titles exclusive to next-gen hardware, Housemarque created yet another game which harnesses the power of a new system at or near launch. Returnal is, in essence, what Housemarque is and why Sony acquired them. They are unique, and they are always looking to set the boundaries for what is possible with next gen consoles.
It was but a dream to imagine what Housemarque would do with a real budget. Well, we are going to be finding that out sooner rather than later.
