Leslie 2.0 | Supergirl “Livewire” Review

"Livewire" -- When an accident transforms a volatile CatCo employee into the villainous Livewire (Brit Morgan, pictured), she targets Cat and Supergirl, on SUPERGIRL, Monday, Nov. 16 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Supergirl’s latest episode, “Livewire,” delivered some Thanksgiving cheer. It seems that even Supergirl isn’t above a good Thanksgiving fight with family. We also got to see a new side of Cat Grant. The claws are retracting, and she’s becoming a much more likeable character. I am now interested in seeing how Kara and Cat’s relationship grows. And we can’t forget how wonderful it was to see Helen Slater and Dean Cain as Kara’s foster parents.

Kara is getting a better handle on being Supergirl and doesn’t have much trouble taking down an alien trying to escape from the DEO. When she learns that the alien was female, Supergirl says, “Respect.” The girl power in this show is contagious. And speaking of girl power, Alex’s mom, Kara’s foster mom, is in town for Thanksgiving. Of course, this is just in time for our latest villain.

Leslie Willis is a radio personality for CatCo. On her show, she was royally trashing Supergirl. Later, Kara eavesdropped on Leslie’s conversation with Cat Grant. Cat was not happy that Leslie was attacking Supergirl. Cat discovered Leslie and helped her career take off. Cat punishes Leslie by putting her on traffic duty. Unfortunately, Leslie was in the CatCo helicopter when a bad storm struck. That’s your cue Supergirl, but it can’t be that easy. Supergirl gets struck by lightning, which transfers into Leslie. This gave her superpowers beyond her wildest dreams. Leslie Willis, now Livewire, is essentially energy. She can use the energy from electricity and Supergirl’s heat vision to power herself.

"Livewire" -- Kara's (Melissa Benoist, right) Thanksgiving may be ruined when she suspects her foster mother, Dr. Danvers (Helen Slater, left), who is coming to town, disapproves of her new role as a superhero, on SUPERGIRL, Monday, Nov. 16 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Livewire goes directly to CatCo to confront Ms. Grant. Cat and Supergirl work together to take down Livewire. Cat even uses herself as bait to draw out Leslie because she believes that she pushed Leslie to become Livewire. The DEO built a device to contain Leslie, but of course, that gets kicked away during her brawl with Supergirl. Supergirl is more innovative than anyone thinks, and she uses the water line to douse Livewire and knock her out. Water and electricity don’t mix; I guess the DEO didn’t think of that.

Meanwhile, Alex is a mess with her mother, Eliza, in town. Kara couldn’t understand why Alex never felt good enough for Eliza. Alex always thought that she needed to be more. Plus, Eliza put a lot of pressure on Alex to always take care of Kara. To Kara, Eliza acts like she’s happy for Kara coming out as Supergirl. But, once she’s alone with Alex, Eliza turns on her. She’s furious that Alex “allowed” her sister to put on the cape; Eliza thought she could count on Alex to watch over Kara, even though Kara is more than capable of taking care of herself.

Kara thinks that Alex should tell her mom about her job at the DEO. If Eliza could see that Alex’s entire career has been helping to protect Kara, then maybe she would understand. When Alex finally reveals her secret life with the DEO, Eliza is furious. When Alex and Kara were children, the Danvers got a visit from the DEO, led by Hank Henshaw.

The DEO wanted to use 13 year old Kara, but the Danvers wouldn’t let them take her. Alex’s father instead offered up his services to the DEO. He would work for the DEO so that Kara could be free to grow up as a normal teenage girl. Sadly, his work at the DEO got him killed. Now, Alex and Kara are determined to find out what happened to their father as well as Henshaw’s involvement.

The unrequited love triangle between Kara, Winn, and James got some traction during this episode. Kara invited both Winn and James to their Thanksgiving dinner. Winn was grateful for the invitation and gladly accepted, but James was going away for the weekend with Lucy Lane. During dinner, Winn didn’t get to tell Kara for what he was thankful, since Alex and Eliza blew up at each other. Later at the office, Winn tells Kara that he was thankful for her. His father is in prison, and he was just happy to be included in a family’s Thanksgiving, even if it didn’t go as planned. Winn ended by giving Kara an unexpected kiss on the cheek. Maybe she’s finally catching onto his feelings for her.

On the other end, Kara doesn’t seem to want to give up her crush on James. Even with his newly rekindled love with Lucy, James still found time to call Kara on his weekend getaway, which is very interesting. Lucy may be back, but is James truly happy with her? Kara can’t hide her smile anytime she talks with James. At this point, it’s only a matter of time until someone gets hurt. Unfortunately, I’m worried that it’s going to be Winn.
