The devil is back, and he’s on a mission. In Lucifer’s sophomore season premiere, Lucifer and Amenadiel search for their mother. Chloe looks to solve another murder while tensions remain with Dan. And Maze returns after disappearing on everyone.
I love that this episode started off with a typical comical moment with Lucifer and Amenadiel. They follow a few thieves who break into a jewelry store. Lucifer is convinced that anyone who has recently died and come back to life has to be his mother. As he explains, his mother must inhabit a recently dead human since she has no body of her own on Earth. In this jewelry store, Lucifer and Amenadiel quickly realize that these are just your garden variety criminals.
Chloe is back on the case, and this time, a stand in for a popular actress has been murdered. There were even fake horns stuck into her skull to make her look like the devil. Obviously, Lucifer finds another way to make this case about himself. He now thinks that his mother is playing games with him, and she must be out to kill him.
As per usual, anytime Lucifer has a problem he can’t quite solve, he goes to see his trusty shrink, Linda Martin. Now, it seems that Linda has had enough of Lucifer’s selfish ways. Lucifer explains just why he has such a strained relationship with his mother. He tells Linda that when his father kicked him out of heaven, his mother didn’t do anything to help Lucifer. So in return, when Lucifer’s father kicked his mother out, Lucifer didn’t do anything to help her. Like mother like son, I suppose.
Linda can’t seem to handle any more of what she thinks is a metaphor for Lucifer. She blatantly asks if these sessions are even helping Lucifer. I was so glad that she finally gave Lucifer a piece of her mind. It caught Lucifer so off guard that he may start thinking about more than just himself… I said maybe.
Chloe and Lucifer wrap up the case nice and neatly. Dan helps out a little bit since his reinstatement. Chloe doesn’t seem to be too happy with his being reinstated so quickly. He did get a demotion, but it seems that the whole department just wants to sweep everything under the rug from the Palmetto case. After the case, Lucifer apologizes to Linda and realizes that he’s blaming everyone but himself. He finally wonders what his mother is doing if she isn’t coming to kill him. He says, “That’s truly terrifying.â€
Meanwhile, Chloe is still trying to figure out Lucifer. She can’t tell if he’s just crazy or if there really is something angelic about him. She has a sample of his blood that she wants to test to prove once and for all if he really is more than human. Lucifer wants her to know the truth, but Amenadiel knows that the humans can’t have any positive proof that there are angels among them, so he takes matters into his own hands. Amenadiel meets Chloe and shoots himself in the stomach… cut to black.
Just when I thought he was being crazy, Amenadiel reveals a fake gun and blood bags. It was all a stunt. He tells Chloe that this is how Lucifer has been getting away with being shot and “coming back to life.†Chloe accepts the explanation, but she doesn’t really believe it, at least not 100{3a19833c997fa52158a43c449fe089ff048ac0506a335cac10721cfa396ff282}. She tells Lucifer that she doesn’t believe that he’s crazy. She does say, “I don’t know what your deal is, but you make me a better detective.†Will Chloe ever learn the truth? She won’t from the blood sample, since she threw it out after the end of the case.
