Hey, do you like buying games, selling them back to get a new game, lending games, being lent games, trading games? Well guess what SONY recently filed a very ludicrous patent that would destroy the future used game market for the PS4. By installing a chip called the “RFID Chip” SONY intends to lock games bought by consumers to their console only. Also even if you intend to play these games offline on a different PS4 the RFID Chip still scans the disk; and like mentioned before if you’re not on your PS4 console, you will not be able to play the game.
Now I don’t know SONY’s business model behind this push, but what if my Ps4 breaks? Am I to simply buy a new PS4, and brand new copies of all my games? If this is the plan that SONY wants to move forward with for their future mothership console then they’re literally committing corporate suicide. I don’t know of anyone who would be able to shell thousand’s of dollars on a brand new console, and games every time something harmful occurs. SCEA has spoken out against this patent because it makes no sense since neither Microsoft or Nintendo have shown an inkling of intent of pursuing this path as well. But the final decision on such matters comes down to what SONY entertainment in Japan decide to do. Hopefully this will be subject to change as talks begin to stir inside the motherland of video games.
I hope this doesn’t happen at all. They shouldn’t kill the used market. If ever this happens i hope this will work like google play.
