One of the most highly requested features from fans for the Playstation 4, is for backwards compatibility. Every Playstation system prior to the PS4 has had backwards compatibility in some form or another. But it does seem as though something is in the pipeline to bring classic games to the modern console. Wired has confirmed with Sony that Playstation 2 titles will be making a much anticipated arrival on the current system very soon, outside of the special edition Star Wars PS4. The system adorned with Darth Vader’s visage comes with Star Wars Battlefront in addition to a few classic games, Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. All but one of those titles are PS2 games. While the easy assumption is that the games are just ports of the old games, Digital Foundry has found that there are signs that the games are running on emulation software on the PS4 but can possibly be enhanced by its power. Racer Revenge is shown running at 60 frames per second over the original’s 33 fps.
What does this mean? The Playstation Experience, a fan driven show that Sony puts on every year, is in a few weeks. More than likely the PS2 emulation will make it’s official unveiling that the event. Hopefully, PS2 classics purchased from PSN on the PS3 will be available to players as well as disc-based emulation. Similar to PS1 discs playing on PS2 systems as well as the PS3. But as of this moment, only time will tell.
