Reunions | Supergirl “Strange Visitor From Another Planet” Review

"Strange Visitor From Another Planet" -- Cat's (Calista Flockhart, right) estranged son, Adam (Blake Jenner, left), arrives in National City, on SUPERGIRL, Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. You’re always guaranteed to smile during an episode of Supergirl, but “Strange Visitor From Another Planet” had a sadder tone. Cat Grant’s son, Adam Foster, is in town, and the reunion is anything but cheery. Adam’s visit is anything but uneventful. Senator Miranda Crane is in town for an anti alien rally, and a White Martian crashes the party.

The White Martian is truly a disgusting creature. He plays right into Senator Crane’s rally about aliens being despicable monsters. When Hank Henshaw first sees the White Martian, he freezes. Later, we find out that the White Martians were responsible for slaughtering the entire Green Martian race, all of J’onn J’onzz’s people. When Martian Manhunter tells the story of his last days on Mars, it’s tragic. He talks of hearing his family’s screams before escaping to Earth.

J’onn tells Alex how he feels guilty for surviving the White Martian attack. Alex assures J’onn that there is no shame in surviving. Now, the White Martian is on the loose posing as Senator Miranda Crane. After breaking out of the DEO, Alex and Hank realize that the White Martian must be keeping the real Senator somewhere. Hank can use his powers to draw out the White Martian, but he will be exposing himself in the process. He must be careful to not reveal himself to anyone else in the DEO; otherwise, General Lane would have cause to take back the DEO from Hank.

"Strange Visitor From Another Planet" -- Kara must help Hank face his painful past when a White Martian, a member of the alien race that wiped out his people, kidnaps Senator Miranda Crane (Tawny Cypress), an anti-alien politician, on SUPERGIRL, Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Supergirl lets Hank know that he’s not in this fight alone. She and Hank take on the White Martian. With their teamwork, they knock him down. Hank then puts the Kryptonite cuffs on Supergirl, so he can kill the White Martian. Even if this world would probably be better with the White Martian gone, Kara talked him out of killing it. The White Martian is safely captured at the DEO. Let’s just hope that the cage can hold him, and he won’t ever escape.

Meanwhile at Kara’s day job, Cat finds her long lost son, Adam Foster, in her office. She’s completely confused as to why he’s there even after he tells her about the letter she wrote. It is then obvious that Kara is the one who sent the letter. Even though Cat is blindsided, she makes time to take him out to dinner. Their dinner does not go so well. Cat is used to interviewing celebrities and politicians, but she has no idea how to talk to her own son. She name drops and talks about her career, but Adam doesn’t care about any of it. Cat does try to apologize for her decisions, but at that point, Adam doesn’t want to hear any more. He leaves the restaurant and a very upset Cat.

Cat is ready to make Kara’s life a living hell for trying to meddle, but Kara doesn’t care. She will do anything she can to reunite these two. She explains to Cat that she would give anything to have more time with her mother. To fix things, Kara goes to talk with Adam. She explains that Cat’s biggest regret was letting him go. That’s when he realizes that Kara wrote the letter. She’s the world’s worst liar, but she still manages to get Adam to sit down with Cat again.

My favorite scene was Adam and Cat sitting down for coffee with Kara as their pseudo therapist. Both Adam and Cat were fairly defensive when they started, but Kara was able to calm both of them down. When they finally got on the same page, Kara let them be. Our final scene with Adam showed his interest in Kara. He asked if she was free for dinner, to which Cat responds that she is. I guess we haven’t seen the last of Adam Foster. How will this affect her friendship with Winn and her relationship with Cat?

Winn is still having a tough time after his confessed love to Kara. I was disappointed that we didn’t get to see more from Winn, but he can’t go back to just being Kara’s best friend. Kara is trying too hard, but she needs to give him time and space. When she finally doesn’t try so hard to be best friends with him again, Winn starts to reach out. Hopefully next week, we can see this duo back together again.
