Warner Bros. might not have any upcoming movies that would necessarily relate to the San Diego Comic Con crowd until Todd Phillips’ The Joker (Played by Joaquin Phoenix), but WB is bringing a beloved franchise in Detective Pikachu and a highly-regarded DC comics movie in Shazam! to San Diego Comic Con in the form of fan activations. Better yet, you don’t need a Comic Con badge to attend.
Detective Pikachu
While not a perfect movie, Detective Pikachu was the best way to kick off what I would have to imagine is a blossoming Pokemon live-action universe. The film stars Justice Smith as Tim Goodman, a once-inspiring Pokemon Trainer searching for clues to the whereabouts of his father, as well as a quirky and hilarious Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds). A slew of Pokemon from various generations made Ryme city truly feel alive. San Diego Comic Con attendees will get to experience the magic of Ryme City. WB stated that the following will be available to attendees: “Guests will be able to explore the city and capture Instagrammable moments including the neon cityscape, Ryme Citymarketplace, film prop displays, an infinity room and more. Fans can win prizes while having the opportunity to take photos with multiple characters from the film including Detective Pikachu himself!â€
Shazam!
Shazam was a lower budget film, but far exceeded fans expectations for what it could do for the DC Cinematic Universe. It’s mixture of dark grittiness was softened with its familial story and comedic timing. The latter of which something Zachary Levi has mastered through his time on screen. One of the major set pieces from the movie (Chilladelphia Winter Carnival) is breezing through San Diego Comic Con. Here is all the carnival has to offer: “At the carnival from the blockbuster film Shazam! Guests will have the chance to enjoy games such as, shooting hoops, ring toss, bean bag toss, high striker and more for a chance to win exclusive prizes and pose for some fun photo opps.â€
