Alienware announced that they will release a new version of its Steam Box once a year, which would mimic the cycle of consoles. The GM of Alienware, Frank Azor, confirmed that this is true, and also stated that the hardware of Alienware Steam Boxes would be locked like Sony and Microsoft. So for the fans of gaming out there who want to play the newest games at the best video settings, you would have to buy a new system.
“Lifecycle wise, consoles update every five, six, seven years, we will be updating our Steam Machines every year,” he explained.
“There will be no customisation options – you can’t really update it.”
“The platform will continue to evolve as the games become more resource intensive.â€
“If you actually want to customise your Alienware Steam Machine, maybe change your graphics card out or put in a new CPU, you would be better off with the standard Alienware X51. This particular product is restricted in its upgrade options.â€
Specifications and the release date are not confirmed yet.
