It’s funny to think that Legends of Tomorrow could have an alternate reality episode, but alas it is here in “Doomworld.†As the name suggests, we get a nice look into what the world would look like if the Legion had their way.
The alternate reality affects all major characters, but there really isn’t all that much of a change for the villains (and Mick). Malcolm, Thawne and Darhk still assume their roles of evil incarnate; they just happen to have an elevated status within Star City. I was hoping that each character would drastically change from their previous selves in the actual reality, but that’s just not the case. There is, however, a clear division against Thawne.
As much as Malcolm and Darhk want to be a part of the Legion, they don’t want to have to live in a world where Thawne has free reign to do what he feels with the spear of destiny. Toward the end of the episode, the two attempt to double-cross him, but of course it doesn’t quite work as expected.
Adding to the complexities of this episode, you have Leonard and Mick back together again, robbing banks of course. But, where Leonard still gets the thrill out of villainy, Mick seems to be a bit immune to the rush. It could be due to the fact that Leonard Snart happens to own the various properties in which they are robbing. The stark contrast between the two former partners did provide for a nice back-and-forth. It was also genuinely nice to see that Mick realizes what he has actually done and attempts to make amends later in the episode.
The leading ladies of the show were also affected by Thawne’s time manipulation. Naturally, they were villains in this timeline. It was neat seeing their “evil†sides; although, we’ve seen plenty of it from Sara in the past.
The comical side of this episode came from the Legends snapping their counterparts out of the “trance†one by one. Each person brought out of the trance punched Mick for deciding to side with The Legion in the previous episodes which caused this entire mess to begin with.
As mentioned earlier, Darhk and Malcolm are only on Eobard’s side up until they are able to get their hands on the spear; and they do get ever so close.
Stein is the only Legend that is stuck in that reality and he is tasked with creating a device that will completely incinerate the spear of destiny, which would make its effects permanent. The big showdown amongst the various teams leads to a very familiar spot. Mick is standing with the spear in hand and has a huge choice to make. Snart tries to convince Mick to give it to him and all that has happened will be different, but Mick sides with the Legends and all SHOULD be good. Should be being the keyword.
Snart is an interesting character because his demeanor always makes your shields go down and lulls you into the idea that he isn’t that bad. Well, he proved how villainous he is in this episode when he froze and smashed Amaya to pieces as she was reading the incantation which would allow them to be back in their actual realities. Alas, the spear was hurled into what would eventually incinerate it, thus leaving them stuck in that reality for now, anyway.
