You can’t make an E3 list without Half Life 3 on it. The folks over at Valve created genre defining games in their Half Life series and we’ve been pining for another one ever since Episode 2 was released in 2007. There’ve been hints of Gordon Freeman making his return but no actual confirmation as to if or when it will be shown. If it were to be shown, would it be exclusive to PC? Gabe Newell has expressed his disdain for Windows specifically and closed platforms in general. Half Life 3 would be a megaton announcement in and of itself, but could you imagine it being a console exclusive title for PS4? It will certainly be on PC if announced, and with Valve porting Portal 2 and having Steam integration which allowed for cross-platform play between the PC and PS3, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.
As much as the fans want Half Life 3, I’m not sure that Valve really needs to make it. They have cash cows in DOTA 2 and Team Fortress 2, Steam is dominating the PC marketplace and they are knee deep in building Steam OS and their controller. If Valve did decide to create their own Steam Machine and packed in Half Life 3, or even if it was a timed-exclusive to their hardware, they would definitely shake up the video game world in dramatic fashion.
