"Better Angels" -- Supergirl (Melissa Benoist, right) is forced to do battle with an unexpected foe and must risk everything -- including her life -- to prevent Non and Indigo from destroying every person on the planet, on the first season finale of SUPERGIRL, Monday, April 18 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Supergirl aired its freshman season finale, “Better Angels,” and it had a little bit of everything. Supergirl went through a ton of emotions between battling her sister under the influence of Myriad to stopping Non and Indigo and their plans to destroy the Eath. She also finally had to confront James about the kiss she sprung on him before Myriad began.

We left off with Alex and Kara about to fight. Alex was under the effects of Myriad, and Kara was trying to reason with her. Just as it appeared that it wouldn’t work, J’onn flies in Eliza to get through to Alex. J’onn protected her mind while Eliza told Alex that she could break through Myriad. It wasn’t really working until Eliza said, “Alex, you’re the strongest of us all.” She reminds Alex that it was her father who always said that. And just like that, Alex was broken of the Myriad control.

With help from Cat Grant and Maxwell Lord, Supergirl works to send out a message of hope to the residents in National City. They send her “S” symbol along with a heartfelt message hoping to snap everyone out of their trances. Supergirl is known to give great speeches, and this may have been her best yet. I won’t write all of it here, but this is my favorite part, “I found out that there is so much love in this world out there for the taking. And you, the people of National City, you helped me. You helped me be who I’m meant to be.” Kara really lets them know that they can all be heroes too. It doesn’t take long until all of National City is snapped out of Myriad.

Well now that the first crisis has been averted, it’s only a matter of time until there’s another attack. Indigo convinces Non that he should kill all of the humans and leave Kara Zor-El behind on a dead Earth. I guess Non agrees because Maxwell Lord notices that the Myriad frequency has again been activated; this time is has been amplified. If they don’t stop it, it will eventually explode everyone’s heads. Great, now what?

Kara knows that she will have to sacrifice everything to save the Earth. She can’t put anyone else in danger and must go after Indigo and Non alone. She says a sort of goodbye to both Winn and James. She thanks Winn for always being a great friend and for being there for her from her first day at CatCo to her first day as Supergirl. She says that their friendship has been one of the best parts of her life. Kara talks with James and tells him that they missed their chance, and they shouldn’t be together. James isn’t buying it and questions why she is saying these things. But she doesn’t give him an answer before leaving for her biggest battle yet.

When Kara goes to give Cat a goodbye, she tells Cat that she has the biggest heart of anyone that Kara knows. While Cat is clearly touched, she doesn’t let it show. She says what everyone is thinking, “That was either my eulogy or your dictated suicide note.” Then she asks Kara to fetch her some juice. You just have to love Cat. Knowing that she can’t say goodbye to Alex or she will never leave, Kara goes to J’onn. She tells J’onn, “I will save the Earth I promise you that. But, I can’t promise that I’ll make it out alive.” At least J’onn realizes that he can help Supergirl defeat Non and Indigo.

General Lane tells Supergirl and J’onn that Non and Indigo are hiding out at the fallen Fort Rozz ship. J’onn and Supergirl don’t hold back any punches. J’onn rips Indigo in half, and Supergirl obliterated Non’s eyes with her heat vision. The special effects and the pure emotion from these scenes were great. With Non and Indigo defeated, Supergirl needs to find a way to stop Myriad from killing everyone. Kara decides to fly the Fort Rozz ship back into space and out of Earth’s atmosphere. I’m still not sure why Kara can’t survive in space or get back to Earth, but in any case, Alex takes her pod and brings her home.

We leave the characters at an interesting point in their lives. Eliza learns that Alex and J’onn know that her husband, Jeremiah Danvers, is still alive and at Project Cadmus. They promise that they will bring him home. Maxwell Lord has the energy device that Non was using to help fuel Myriad. General Lane gave it to him, which is probably not a good idea. Kara and James are back on track. He gives her a portrait of herself, Kara Danvers not Supergirl, and she’s touched. Then, he kisses her. I guess he isn’t giving up just yet.

One of my favorite parts of the episode was with Kara at CatCo. Cat packs up all of Kara’s stuff in a box and starts escorting her out. Kara is confused and upset, assuming that she is being fired. Cat leads her past the elevators and into an empty office. Cat explains that Kara is being promoted and essentially given an empty slate. Kara can create the job that she wants, which is every twenty something’s dream. Cat says, “You have become the best assistant I have ever had, and that is why I have to give you up.”
