Love is in the air this week on Supergirl. It’s Valentine’s day, and both Alex and Mon-El are ready to have a traditional sappy Valentine’s day. Kara is slightly preoccupied when Mr. Mxyzptlk wants to court her into marrying him. He vows to wow her, until she falls madly in love with him.
Kara and Mon-El are very confused after Mr. Mxyzptlk expresses his love for Kara. Mon-El tries to argue with him, but Mxyzptlk just sends him to the DEO in his underwear. Kara does not agree to marry Mxyzptlk, and he is okay with it. He will just keep pursuing her until she agrees. He thinks she’s just playing hard to get.
When Kara sees the parasite loose in National City, she’s confused as to how he got out. Then, Superman comes down from the sky to help her stop the parasite. She’s excited to see her cousin, until she realizes that it’s actually Mxyzptlk dressed up like Clark. I’m no expert, but dressing up like her cousin is probably not the way to a girl’s heart. Mxy tells Kara that he will continue to wreak havoc on her city until she agrees to marry him. Kara begrudgingly agrees, much to everyone’s chagrin. Have no fear, Supergirl has a plan.
Kara agrees to meet Mxy at the Fortress of Solitude to marry him. The only way to defeat Mxy is to get him to say his name backwards. Most of us can barely say his name forwards let alone backwards. Kara locks Mxy into the Fortress and essentially starts a self destruct sequence. Mxy pleads with Kara to save them. He can’t stand the thought of her dying. He begs for the code to stop the self destruction, but he can’t read Kryptonian. With only moments to spare, Kara has Mxy punch in the code, and it appears on the screen, “K-L-T-P-Z-Y-X-M.†After J’onn told Kara that in his culture, writing something down is like truly saying it, it gave Kara the idea to have Mxy write his name backwards. Mxy says he just wanted someone to love him, but Kara tells him that he can’t force love. He has to let someone find him.
Alex is so excited to have a traditional sappy Valentine’s day with her girlfriend, Maggie. She’s never gotten to celebrate with a significant other, so she is excited to do something fun. Maggie, on the other hand, thinks that Valentine’s Day is stupid. Kara thinks that Alex can do something fun for Maggie that doesn’t have to be traditional. She should shape Valentine’s Day into something that Maggie can appreciate. Alex agrees, but it backfires. Maggie is pissed that Alex didn’t listen when she said she didn’t want to do Valentine’s Day. There’s clearly something else wrong here, not just one pet peeve about not being heard.
Maggie finally reveals that her parents were not supportive of her coming out. When Maggie was 14 years old, she had her first crush on a girl. It was the first time that she realized she had feelings for girls. On Valentine’s Day, Maggie declared her feelings to her friend through a card. Her friend gave the card to her parents who then called Maggie’s parents and outed her. Maggie’s dad kicked her out, and she had to live with an aunt for three years. It’s understandable why Maggie has an issue with Valentine’s Day, but she should have told Alex regardless of not wanting to scare her. Maggie finally comes around and puts together a Valentine’s Day prom for Alex. She says that Alex is the one woman who could make her like Valentine’s Day.
As if that weren’t good enough, Winn is finding love as well. When an alien woman saves Winn from some alien thugs, he is awestruck. She’s from Starhaven, and Winn is fascinated. He asks her out on a date, and she agrees. Winn got reservations for his date with Lyra at a fancy restaurant. She comes onto him strong, and they don’t exactly make it to dinner. When Winn asks Lyra out again, she’s self conscious out in public. Winn just tells her that she’s beautiful. Lyra is worried that he used her just for a notch in his belt, something to brag about sleeping with an alien. Winn tells her that he’s scared of falling for an alien; he’s scared of falling for anyone. She’s not an experience for him; he wants to pursue an actual relationship with her.
