Sony has finally purchased acclaimed studio known most recently for Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games. They will join PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).
Through the years, it would have been easy to mistake Insomniac for a first party Sony studio. The two companies have always had a great relationship, and it has been immensely fruitful for both companies.Â
Insomniac Games has been independently run for the past 25 years; although, they have developed massively popular franchises alongside Sony in the Ratchet and Clank and Resistance series. The timing leads me to believe that the two are going to begin ramping up for the next console generation. My only fear is that Insomniac turns into a Spider-Man studio. As much as I loved the game, the folks over at Insomniac are far too creative to become a licensed studio. Admittedly, this is complete conjecture on my part.Â

So, since the two are now officially in a partnership, what’s next? I can’t fathom the idea of them not dipping back into the Ratchet and Clank well. As diverse as a stable of games Sony has nothing really hits the same market that Ratchet and Clank does. There hasn’t been a Ratchet and Clank title since the reimagining of the original back in 2016. Outside of that, there will certainly be a new Spider-Man game after Insomniac’s recent title sold over 12.5 million copies. But, what else might make their slate leading into PS5? I would absolutely love for a remake, or a new Resistance game, but I’m not sure if that is a priority for them or if they have the studio capacity to even get it kicked off the ground.Â
While the future games that might come from Insomniac are a bit of an unknown, one thing that can absolutely be said after this official partnership kicks off, this a win for Sony, a win for Insomniac and most certainly a win for fans of Playstation.Â
