With news of rapidly collapsing Antarctic ice and humanity’s generally panicked response to the increasingly traumatic evidence that the earth is fed up with our greenhouse gas creating monkey business, Hollywood’s response is to try and provide us with a message: we need to get the hell off of this rock. Not very calming, or hopeful that us and mother Earth will live happily ever after, but then again, Roland Emmerich has proven time and again that our ruination is far more entertaining.
In making Interstellar, Christopher Nolan, still riding the wave of positive karma from the Dark Knight trilogy, is now going to be given the chance to walk the fine line between exploitative hand wringing over our industrialized malfeasance and providing us with a fantastical beacon of possibility that is as grounded as he can make it. Based on this trailer, and Matthew McConaughey’s recent track record, I think he might just be able to do it.
